The chemical process plant is running a horizontal centrifugal
pump 24/7 used in the production of bromide. The pump experiences
highly caustic conditions in an outdoor application. Failure
history has been kept on the pump since 1998. In the beginning,
the pump was experiencing 11 failures per year at an average
rebuild cost of $3,345 per failure. The primary failure was
blamed on the mechanical seal. After further investigation it
was determined that moisture was the root cause of the majority
of failures in this pump. To address the moisture issues, in
1999 the company switched from mineral oil to high-grade synthetic
oil for its premium emulsification properties. Problems continued
to exist. The next step taken was to install premium grade bearing
